Before we dive deep into understanding the process, let’s first understand what a pilot truly means:  A pilot is an individual, who develops and uses his/her skills to maneuver and control the flight system of an aircraft. The aircraft may be used for the transportation of citizens/ goods or military purposes.

In India, to become a pilot, you can go about 2 ways

  1. Obtain a CPL(Commercial Pilot license)
  2. Become a Pilot at IAF (Indian Air Force)

CPL(Commercial Pilot License)

The Commercial Pilots Licence (CPL) course combines both practical flight training and the theoretical knowledge required to fly aeroplanes.
 
The course requires a minimum of Two hundred hours flying time – including solo flight – ending with a skills test with an examiner. The skills test will examine your general handling and navigation skills.

Now that you know, what CPL actually means, let’s move to the steps you need to follow for obtaining the pilot license.

  1. Prerequisites: The candidate should be qualified from 12th board(or 10+2) and minimum of 17 years of age.
  2. Medical Fitness: You’ll need a perfect eyesight(6/6) for one eye, while a minor defect in the other eye is acceptable. The candidate should not have or any history of mental illness.
  3. Assessment: CPL training test includes 3 steps (i) written (ii) Aptitude & (iii) Interview. You need to apply DGCL CPL test and clear the exam test with 70% or more for the qualification.   4. Training: After you clear the test, you’ll need 200 flying hours and the training will continue for about 15-28 months. Lastly, all you need is to get your hands on the training and continue your career as a successful pilot.
